General Information:

The Junior Farmers of Prince Edward Island was established in 1948 and later changed its’ name to the Prince Edward Island Young Farmers in 2002.  Since then the PEI Young Farmers have developed and worked together to create partnerships with groups and individuals in Canada and PEI.  In turn, this helps us share experiences, foster leadership, increase communication and networking skills to build the future generation of young farmers on Prince Edward Island.  We currently have thirty-five members active and try to maintain that number which is very hard considering the economic times in the farming community.  Although, our numbers seem to fluctuate, we continue to have support from new and past members.

Mission Statement:

Founded in 1948, the PEI Young Farmers Association is committed to shaping Future Agricultural Leaders; ensuring industry sustainability through creating awareness and acting as tomorrow’s voice for the Agricultural Community.

Goal:

The PEI Young Farmers Association provides support, encouragement, and opportunities for leadership, cooperation and socialization among its members striving to improve the Island’s Agriculture Industry.

Objectives:

Promote youth involvement in Agriculture by focusing on membership growth and development and active participation.
Promote effective leadership skills by holding seminars, guest speakers, exchange programs etc.
Improve Agricultural Awareness by participation in other agriculture organizations, advocacy activities, public relations, and marketing and communications efforts.
Friendship and Fun.

Future Aspirations:

Seeking new support and membership.
Developing new opportunities and expanding communication among members.
Hosting a conference.
Creating partnerships.
Encourage and educate younger children about the importance of agriculture.
Increase networking abilities with young farmers’ organizations in Canada and around the world.

Funding:
The Young Farmers of PEI apply for the provincial grant application offered by the Canada Young Farmers’ Forum every year to help cover costs of hosting events listed above; complete a major project and help fund promotional items.  We also send letters requesting sponsorship from the provincial government and agricultural businesses on Prince Edward Island.  Furthermore, most events and projects are completed through in-kind donations from board members and other partners.

The Young Farmers of Prince Edward Island meet on the 2nd Tuesday of each month except for May - August. There is a guest speaker invited to each of the meetings to educate and inform the group on a agriculture related topic.

The group also has a social following each meeting along with various social events throughout the year.
